Scaling in two dimensions separately

Experiment with changing the size and shape of the tree by stretching it vertically and horizontally (use the sliders). The stretch factor in each direction is shown next to the slider dot. The area of the tree before and after stretching is shown under the trees.

You can find how much the area of the tree changes as an area ratio or area change factor by dividing (area of new tree)/(area of original tree). Compare the area change factor to the horizontal and vertical scale factors. What do you notice? Try these pairs of numbers: horizontal =2, vertical = 1 horizontal = 3, vertical = 1 horizontal = 1, vertical = 2 horizontal = 2, vertical = 2 horizontal = 3, vertical = 2 horizontal = 1/2, vertical = 1 horizontal = 1, vertical = 1/2
