Substances often are mixed with each other and first need to be separated.[br][br]There are different ways of separating substances liking filtering, decanting, extracting and many others.[br][br]An advanced form of separation is chromatography which utilizes the solubility and adhesion of a substance.
Coffee filters (preferably white), felt pens of different colours, water, cup, scissors[br]
Cut a small stripe off a coffee filter. Make small dots in a line rather at the end of the stripe with the felt pens. Put or better hang the coffee filter with the coulored end into a cup or glas.[br]The setup should now look like in the picture below.[br][br]Now add water into the cup until the bottom of the paperstrip dips into the water (the coulored dots should still be above water level).[br][br]And now wait. Being patient is an important part of chemistry.
After you have finished your experiments, write the combination of numbers correctly discribing what happened into the solution box:[br]1: The water doesn't do anything.[br]2: The water is being "pulled up" into the coffee filter.[br]3: The coffee filter reacts with the water and starts burning.[br]4: The process is over after a few seconds.[br]5: The process is over after a few minutes.[br]6: The process ist over after a few hours.[br]7: The water doesn't effect the colours.[br]8: The water partially separates the colours.[br][br](Example: If 1, 2 and 4 are happening, write 124).
