Parallel Lines

Lines 1 and 2 can be manipulated by moving the corresponding sliders. Please answer the questions below.

1. Move the sliders until you make the two lines parallel. What do you notice about the equations of the lines?

2. Change the equation of Line 1 to y = 2x +1. Make a prediction: what does the equation of Line 2 need to be in order for the lines to be parallel. Test that prediction.

3. Now take a look at the distance between the two lines.

a. Write down your first line equation.[br]b. Write down your second line equation.[br]c. Take any 3 points that are on the first line and write down the coordinate.[br]d. What is the shortest distance between each point to the line 2? (You can write the distance using square unit that already shown in the diagram)
