As many monuments in Khiva the Mohammed Rakhim Khan Madrassa (1871-76) dates from the 19th century. It's opposite of the Kukhna Ark, the fortress of Khiva. [br]The spandrel of the west iwan is decorated by a geometrical pattern, which is rather rare in Khiva, where floral patterns form the large majority.
The 19th century isn't known for its most ambitious star patterns.[br]The pattern on the spandrel is built up only out of hexagons.[br]In it the mids of the edges aren't connected. The top angle of the stars is widened so that the polygons between the stars don't form regular hexagons.[br]Notice again that the sizes of the glazed tiles don't match with the pattern, that runs over the borders of the tiles.
