octagons - median

A classic pattern is formed by combining regular octagons with squares. By connecting the middles of edges one can create a star pattern. Chosing which middles are connected defines the pattern. Authors develloped a notatification system for them. The applet below shows so-called 8/2 stars. In it one starts counting from one edge connecting its middle with the middle of the 2nd edge you meet. Measuringn the angle between the line and the edges, this option is also called the median system. The two lines from the middle of each edge are perpendicular. In the acute system they form an angle of 45°, in the obtuse system an angle of 135°
Patterns as this can be found at different places, even at the headboard of our hotel in Nukus.
