Isle of Natural Sciences

The Natural Sciences consist of Biology (Life), Chemistry and Physics (Physical)), and Earth and Space Science[br][br]Scientific Method – the manner in which we study the interactions around humans and their surroundings. This topic in considered in all of the following area and on its own. (Critical to know!)[br]Life Science– the science of life as we know it. (40%)[br]Physical Science – the science of matter and energy and interactions between the two. (40%)[br]Earth and Space Science – The study of the planet Earth and the Space surrounding Earth. (20%)

Bacteria Growth

Experiment with changing the bacteria type and running the animation.
Bacteria Growth
For each colour can you;[br][br]1. Sketch a graph of the number of bacterium against time.[br]2. Write an equation linking the number of bacterium to time?[br]3. Predict how many bacterium you would have after 28 days? [br][br]Use the right hand panel to check your sketches and equations by typing them into the input bar.

Expressing Numbers in Scientific Notation

Discover the connection between standard notation and scientific notation in this activity.
Putting It All Together
Answer these open ended questions on your own or with others to form deeper math connections.
What is the place value of the digit 1 in the number [math]\textsf{1.2\times10^3}[/math]?
A number in scientific notation has a negative number as the exponent of 10. What do you know about the number?
Numbers in scientific notation are in the format [math]\textsf{a\times10^b}[/math]. What are the requirements of the coefficient [math]\textsf{a}[/math]?

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

Data Analysis means being able to find the following measures of central tendency: mean, median, mode, and range. The mode is written as a list of elements separated by a comma. When there is no mode, click on the No Mode check box below the mode value entry.[br][br]Many call the mean, the average. But there is more than just one value used to persuade people to their side; these are the mode, median, and range.
Definitions
mean: add all values is set and divide by the number of values[br]median: the number in the middle of the sort list of values; when there is an even number the median is the average of the two middle numbers[br]mode: the most common value in the set; sometimes there is no value or multiple different common values {Most Often Data Entered}; Mode answers must be inside of { } for None, {#} for a single mode, {#,#,...} for multiple mode answers.[br]range: the difference of the largest and smallest values
