Piece Work: Tangrams and the Pythagorean Theorem[br]Tangrams can demonstrate the Pythagorean Theorem. [br]The yellow figure in the diagram above is a right triangle;[br]the seven pieces that make up the square on the hypotenuse [br]can be rearranged to form squares on the other two sides.[br]The third-century mathematician Liu Hui used to explain [br]the theorem by dissecting and rearranging squares. [br]Proper tangrams did not appear until centuries later, but [br]modern Chinese mathematician Liu Dun writes, [br]“We can hypothesize that the inventor of the Tangram, if not a [br]mathematician, was at least inspired or enlightened by” this practice.[br]Credit: Greg Ross[br]http://www.futilitycloset.com/2014/09/18/piece-work-2/[br](From Jerry Slocum, The Tangram Book, 2003.)
