Here [math]w = bu[/math]. Move [math]b[/math] and [math]u[/math] to observe linearity. Explain what the sketch demonstrates.

What does the sketch demonstrate?

The left figure shows that [math]w=bu[/math]. The right figure shows that [math]Mw=bMu[/math]. Together they show (algebraically) that [math]M(bu)=Mw=bMu[/math]. [br][br]Geometrically, this means the image is scaled by the same factor as the preimage.
