Introduction

How our number system works
Our mathematical system of number uses place value to give meaning to strings of numbers. The first place is the ones place, then the tens place, the hundreds place, and so on. Notice that these can all be simplified to powers of ten (eg. 10^0, 10^1, 10^2,...). This system that we use every day is called base-10 or the decimal system (it's also sometimes called denary). But base-10 isn't the only exponent based number system. For example we could use a system that uses powers of two or five. We could even use powers of three halves (base one and a half). Somehow, they all can be used to express any number (that isn't imaginary, imaginary numbers are always denoted by i). Lets dive into are everyday number system in more depth.
If you would like to better understand the concept, I personally find the global math project site very useful.
