Session 10

Activity 1: Adding fractions
[b]Adding fractions [/b]corresponds to putting pieces together. [br][br]Represent the the following operations using the applet. What fraction is represented in the end? Can you simplify the result?[br][br]1) [math]\text{\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{3}=}[/math][br][br]2) [math]\text{\frac{1}{4}+\frac{2}{4} =}[/math][br][br]3) [math]\text{\frac{1}{6}+\frac{2}{6}=}[/math][br][br]4) [math]\text{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{4}=}[/math]
Activity 2:
To subtract two fractions, we take away the second fraction from the first fraction[br]How can we represent this using the applet? Try representing the following subtractions:[br][br]1) [math]\text{\frac{2}{5}-\frac{1}{5}=}[/math][br][br]2) [math]\text{\frac{3}{7}-\frac{1}{7} = }[/math][br][br]3) [math]\text{\frac{2}{6}-\frac{1}{3}=}[/math]
Adding and subtracting
Fractions with the same denominator use the same pieces! [br]When we add or subtract them, we only add or subtract the number of pieces. [br][br]To add or subtract fractions with the same denominator, we keep the denominator, and add or subtract the numerators.[br][br][b]Example: [/b][i]Try representing the following operations, to check that they are correct![br][br][/i][math]\text{\frac{2}{5}+\frac{1}{5} =\frac{2+1}{5}=\frac{3}{5} }[/math][br][br][math]\text{\frac{4}{5}-\frac{2}{5} = \frac{4-2}{5}=\frac{2}{5}}[/math]
What happens in the real line?
We can also add fractions on the real line! Use the following applet to represent the following additions:[br][br]a) [math]\text{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}=}[/math][br][br]b) [math]\text{\frac{1}{6}+ \frac{3}{6}=}[/math][br][br]c) [math]\text{\frac{2}{8}+\frac{1}{8}=}[/math]
Activity 3: Additions on the line
We can also add fractions on the real line! Use the following applet to represent the following additions:[br][br]a) [math]\text{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}=}[/math][br][br]b) [math]\text{\frac{1}{6}+ \frac{3}{6}=}[/math][br][br]c) [math]\text{\frac{2}{8}+\frac{1}{8}=}[/math]
Activity 4: Subtractions on the line:
Represent the following subtractions with the next applet:[br][br]1) [math]\text{\frac{3}{5}-\frac{1}{5}=}[/math][br][br]2) [math]\text{\frac{5}{7}-\frac{3}{7}=}[/math][br][br]3) [math]\text{\frac{9}{10}-\frac{3}{10}=}[/math]
