Here are parabolas of the form (x-h)^2 = 4p(y-k) and (y-k)^2 = 4p(x-h)

Grab and move point V to reposition the vertex. Slide the value of "p" to change the focal length observe how the parabola changes. Grab and move point A to see how the distance from A to the focus always equals the distance from A to the directrix. Notice that the length of the latus rectum (in green) is always four time the focal length (in purple).
