The tangent function is a tangent

This applet shows students the original definition of the tangent function -- as the length of segment that's part of the line x=1, which is tangent to the unit circle. Because the definition is a length, rather than a ratio (as when the tangent is defined as a slope or in terms of a right triangle), it makes it easier for students to develop intuition about some of the most important properties of the tangent function.
