This activity let's the student make sense of the meaning of the phrase "distance of a point to a line" ("distance of a point from a line"), which really means shortest distance of a point to a line.
It also helps the students to experience the fact that the shortest distance of a point to a line happens when the line segment joining the point to the line is perpendicular to the line.
