I made a GeoGebra sketch to look at these patterns. It allows you to set the number of nodes (N), the nodes skipped for the first segment (skip), and the relative speed of the gap. Each step the beginning of the segment moves one, and the end of the segment moves (end) steps. The cardioid is for end=2, and there are many fascinating patterns to find.
