You may wish to let learners know the solution is ϕ = (1 + √5)/2 = 1.61803... so that their focus is on the method not the answer.
It would be a good idea to have named strategies for problem-solving heuristics. I'd suggest following Polya on this and I'll upload a list on a linked web-page later.
