Fraction Models

This worksheet is for investigating/comparing fractions through the manipulation of rectangular and circular area models.

Equivalent Fractions

Move the sliders m and n to control the fraction.[br][br]You can create more slices by changing the slider, d. and then ticking the checkbox. [br][br]The fractions are equal (equivalent), if you write the two fractions in the form [math]\frac14[/math], [math]\frac5{20}[/math] for example. How can you tell they are equivalent?

Comparing Fractions with Unlike Denominators Using Models

Compare fractions with unlike denominators using visual models in this interactive activity.
Putting It All Together
[i]Answer these open ended questions on your own or with others to form deeper math connections. [/i]
Comparing fractions with the same denominator is easy. For example, comparing [math]\frac{3}{4}[/math] with [math]\frac{1}{4}[/math], we know that 3 parts out of 4  are greater than 1 part out of 4. Using a similar concept and without finding a common denominator, how would you compare fractions with the same numerators?

Geometry 2D - Shapes Activity

The purpose of this activity is to give students the opportunity to discover that 2D-shapes are all around us. Students will also be able to identify 2D-shapes.
Directions for teachers:[br]Allow students to preview the video on 2D-shapes. [br]Allow students to identify the 2D-shapes in the image. Allow students to use the tools provided to trace over all the 2D-shapes on the image that they see. Students will also name the shapes and write the number of each 2D-shape found.
