This applet illustrates the story of the wise man who asked his ruler to fill the chessboard with rice when the ruler wanted to reward him.
The applet demonstrates how the exponential increase (indicial increase) , in this case of the power of 2, produces large increases.
This applet can also be used to introduce the idea of indices as a short cut to representing large numbers.
Students will also use their calculators to work out the number of rice grains in various squares on the board, and get the opportunity
to use the calculator function to obtain values of 2 to the power n where n ranges from 1 to 64.
(Note that Geogebra was able to work out answers up to 2^57, but hand held calculators may not be able to reach that point of accuracy)
(Updated 18 May 2015 :- fixed chessboard so it does not accidentally get moved by user dragging)
