Students first follow the instructions to carry out some arithmetic operations on each of the four starting number values shown in the spreadsheet cells, and evaluate each step from (a) to (e).
Finally when the student is more confident, they will use the variable x as the starting value, and type in the algebraic expression at each step.
The system will feedback to the students if the expressions they input is correct or otherwise.
