Sarah Harrelson
I have been a member of the math department at LASA High School in Austin Texas since 2008. Before that I taught at various times at Suffolk Community College in New York, Edina High School in Edina, MN, and with the UMTYMP program at the University of Minnesota, TC. I grew up in Houston, TX and attended Bellaire High School in Houston and The University of Texas in Austin.
I'm a graduate of the University of Minnesota's Masters in Math with Emphasis in Education program. This is an amazing program for producing highly skilled math teachers. You can learn more about it at their website: https://math.umn.edu/masters-programs/mathematics-and-mathematics-education
At LASA I've specialized in teaching unusual classes that undermine the traditional approach to teaching mathematics as a series of computational skills intended to prepare you for other disciplines. I view mathematics as an intellectual and artistic pursuit that can offer students of any background or aptitude a source of respite and beauty in a sometimes chaotic world. My classes tend to focus on logical argument and geometric reasoning over computational proficiency.
As for my hobbies - I take about a million photographs. I love the Astros and I don't want to talk about trashcans. I believe Jose Altuve is a national treasure. I have two kids who both play competitive travel softball (which is maybe the best sport ever invented). I have a large yellow dog who sheds too much. My favorite band is Lucero (https://luceromusic.com/).
